A Guide to Aging? Not Really

A guide to aging? Not really, because it is going to happen anyway. A few signs of aging do present themselves. We notice a few more wrinkles compared to the photo from last year, and maybe even the year before. But what else do you notice? A number of us notice the ears are seemingly bigger. Yikes! Those darned ear hairs are growing like rope. Is this normal? Nose hairs are now more unruly than ever and certain parts of the body are prone to sagging.

The good news is that these external changes are normal and fortunately none mean that we are unhealthy. All are part of the process of living longer.

Internally, the chemical changes have probably been addressed by your M.D.

But what about other bodily changes? The more aggravating side of aging; tiredness, either more or less need for sleep than we used to require, the loss of libido, aches and pains in parts of our body that we didnt even know existed, sore joints, sore muscles just seemingly coming from no known cause. Then we get diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes, which incidentally can help explain some of our lethargy. You have changed all your bad habits, and no longer smoke, take illegal drugs, and have even altered your alcohol intake levels. And now you are considering going back to all your old habits because you feel just as bad as you did before you got righteous! But before you do that, consider that even type 2 diabetes, even when chemically controlled, has shown to decrease with exercise. Tiredness can be a sign of not enough exercise. A lack of exercise may also be responsible for excessive joint and muscle pain, lack of stamina and vitality. So try some exercise, gentle ones but on a consistent level. And believe it or not, that is the secret. Consistency! So gird the loins, go for that 5 minute walk and upon your return do these little stretches.

1) Get down on your hands and knees. Arch back upwards, tighten stomach muscles and tuck chin under. Hold for a count of 20. Relax and from starting position repeat 5 times.
2) Sitting up with legs out in front, reach along one leg with the hand on same side until a comfortable stretch is felt in the back of the leg. Hold for a count of 20. Keep legs straight. DO NOT BOUNCE. Do this 3 times, alternating with the other hand and leg.
3) Standing, grab your ankle with the same side hand and pull it towards the buttocks until a stretch is felt. The other hand may stabilize you against a wall or chair if needed. Hold for a count of 20. Repeat with the other leg. Once is enough.

Try these few little stretching exercises for a week, and if you feel they help, search for more. So get up off that couch and start living again!

Imagination is Your Tool

Imagination is the first step in improving your situation in life. Wherever you are, whoever you are, and whatever you may be doing for an occupation, there is room for you to make yourself more useful, and more productive; by simply developing and using your imagination.

Let us use the classic example of your current career. You may not like your job or the work in which you are now doing.

There are two ways of getting out of that work. One way is to take but little interest in what you are doing, aiming merely to do enough with which to "get by." Very soon you will find a way out, because the demand for your services will cease.

The other and better way is by making yourself so useful and efficient in what you are now doing that you will attract the favorable attention of those who have the power to promote you into more responsible work that is more to your liking.

It is your privilege to make the choice as to which way you will proceed.

How can you make yourself more useful? Use your imagination. Look for new and better ways to do something that makes your work more efficient. Look for the tasks that no one else wants to do and take them on to your self as part of your job. Soon your place of employment will see you as a valuable asset to their business and you will be granted more. More responsibility as well as more pay.

Success in this world has always been a matter of individual effort; you will only be deceiving yourself if you think that you can succeed without the co-operation of other people. Success is a matter of individual effort only to the extent that each person must decide, in their own mind, what it is that is wanted in that situation. This involves the use of your imagination. From this point on, achieving success is a matter of skillfully and tactfully inducing the others to co-operate.

Before you can ask for co-operation from others, and even before you have the right to expect co-operation from other people, you must first show a willingness to co-operate with them. This is all part of the law of attraction. Simply put; what you sow, you will reap.

The law upon which this lesson is based, would, of itself, practically insure success to all who practice it in all they do. Yes you can become as you will, but how you treat others is how you will be treated. You will require the assistance of many other people in this life. It is not that you cant do it all yourself, it is that you will not have the time or the resources to. You will have to rely on others who have different knowledge and different skills than you to accomplish your main goals in life.

So use your imagination, discover all the things that are hiding in plain sight. The world will be a better place, if you will use your imagination.

Be Blessed

Credit Card Debt Management

Many times people will look at a credit card and see only the ease and convenience with which they can painlessly get the things that they want. When asked to list their debts, people will list their mortgage payments, their car payments, and other installment loans, and not list their credit cards.

The fact is that the balance on a credit card is the amount of the debt (NOT THE MINIMUM MONTHLY PAYMENT)...and that debt only increases each time an interest charge or a late charge is added. Paying only the minimum on a credit card balance will mean that it will be many years before that debt is paid off.

It is astounding, but a great many people have no idea what the interest rate that is charged by their credit card companies or whether that interest rate is simple or compound interest. (It's compound...and it is well above the national interest rate.)

Too many households in America carry far too much credit card debt. Seventy-five percent of households, in a recent study of American spending habits, are carrying a substantial amount of credit card debt. (Only 41% of American households have saving accounts.)

Now, don't misunderstand me...I am not knocking credit cards. I have a few of my own and I use them almost every month. Credit cards are practically as essential as an automobile in today's world, and if one does business or shops on the Internet, a credit card is indispensable. I also pay the balance before the credit card companies can charge a penny of interest.

Paying interest means that everything that you buy on a credit card cost you more than it would have cost if you had simply paid cash or written a check for it. The best rule is to pay as you go. Use your credit cards, but pay balances before interest is added.

Chairs, Posture and the Alexander Technique

As a teacher of the Alexander Technique(1), I am frequently asked about chairs by my students, and about which designs are best. Some have been given very expensive, ergonomically-designed chairs at work and wonder if they are actually any better than ordinary ones. Others complain about their car seats, or about the curved plastic chairs often found in waiting rooms and in many airport lounges.

t is certainly true that some chairs are a lot more comfortable than others, and that some chairs make it easier to have a healthier upright posture. But even if you could find the perfect chair, you could hardly carry it around with you all day long. Sooner or later, you would be confronted with a choice between standing or sitting in a less than desirable chair.

From an Alexander Technique perspective, looking for the perfect chair is an exercise in futility. It is our body that sits in a chair, and if we want to improve our comfort and health, our primary attention must be directed at improving our own functioning - that is, what we do with our own body when we sit.

Its a sort of bad news, good news situation: The bad news is that we cant blame our aches and pains on our furniture. As the cartoon character Pogo once remarked, We have met the enemy and they is us! The good news is that we have it within our power to change the way we sit and, in fact, we can learn how to sit well in virtually any situation that presents itself to us.

The Alexander Technique is a very powerful method of learning to do just that. It teaches you ways to direct your body so that you can have an easy upright posture in virtually any sitting situation you find yourself in.

But what about those expensive ergonomically-designed chairs? Wont they insure good seating posture at least during the time youre using them?

Im afraid the answer is no. Its entirely possible to slouch, or distort your body in other ways while using these chairs. An ergonomist colleague of mine tells me that offices around the country are littered with unused very expensive chairs (and other furniture items) because they didnt seem to help.

In fact, some ergonomic designs are positively harmful. When I lived in England, training to become an Alexander Technique teacher, I often had occasion to use the British Rail system. I soon noticed three distinct types of seats: older, very basic, seats with padded flat bottoms and backs; somewhat newer seats (from the 1950s and 60s) that had a forward bend in the seat backs; and some quite new seats that combined an exaggerated bend with a forward-protruding head rest.

I noticed that the newer chairs made it very difficult for the average rider to sit without having his or her head pushed so far forward that a slouch was almost inevitable. Of course, as I said earlier, with training its possible to sit well in pretty much any chair, but these new seats were among the most challenging Ive ever encountered. The older chairs were far better because their neutral design didnt force unnatural body contortions.

I learned that these new seats were, in fact, designed by ergonomists and that the way they went about their design was to match the chair to posture of the average rider. But the average rider has pretty poor sitting posture to begin with so these chairs were simply reinforcing that prevailing pattern.

So, what advice can I give regarding chairs? First, dont look to a chair as the primary solution to poor posture - remember its your posture and so its you that has to learn how to change it. But if you have a choice, I recommend very simple, basic designs - fairly flat, reasonably firm bottoms and backs that do not force your torso into any particular shape.

In addition, theres a lot to be said for having your knees at a lower height that your hips. This tends to encourage the natural double C curvature of your spine that provides easy upright support for your body. The simplest way to do this is to use a stool whose base is higher than the typical chair when you can. My students are often skeptical when I recommend this (Theres no backrest!) but most of those who try it for a few days report feeling far more comfortable once they get used to the added height.

1. The Alexander Technique is a century-old method of learning how to release harmful tension from your body. The Complete Guide to the Alexander Technique is a comprehensive information source.

The Ergonomics.org website at http://www.ergonomics.org explores the relationship between the science of ergonomics and the benefits of Alexander Technique training.

Mortgage Fraud - Can Someone Steal Your Home

Everybody knows that someone can steal a car, a wallet or a credit card, but how do you steal a home, a thousand ton gorilla fixed to the ground. Can it really be done!

You own a home if you are the registered owner of the property at the land title office of your local jurisdiction. If your name is replaced by somebody else name at the land title office, you are no longer the owner. You have just lost your home.

How can that happen?

When you purchase a property, the lawyer will do a couple of checks, such as the identity of the current owner, that the property is free of all liens and encumbrances, that the property has a clean title.

The seller will sign some papers that effectively allow the lawyer to arrange the transfer of the property to the new owner. The land title office will register the name of the new owner in their records and the previous owner no longer owns the house.

Now if someone can produce some fake identification purporting to be the owner of a property. Obviously the fraudster would have done considerable research on the person he/she is trying to defraud, such as finding information about the victim's full and complete name, date of birth, social security number, credit card number, driver license number, current address, racial background and even physical resemblance. An unsuspecting lawyer doing the paper work for the transfer of property may believe that the fraud perpetrator is the genuine owner. The lawyer thus completes the sale. The fraudster receives the full proceeds of the transaction while the victim looses the house.

Another way to defraud a property owner is to mortgage the property that you do not own. Typically the fraudster who has acquired fake identification and done his/her homework, will approach a bank for a mortgage. The bank will check the identity of the applicant, his/her credit history, his/her income etc. The bank will also arrange appraisal or inspection of the property. But the bank may not know that it was presented with false identification and was dealing with someone who is trying to commit a mortgage fraud.

Once the mortgage is approved, the bank will instruct a lawyer to arrange for the execution of the mortgage documentation and registration of the mortgage with the land title office. Money is advanced to the applicant and the victim has a mortgage registered against his/her property for which he/she never received a dime.

In both scenarios the fraud is easier to commit if it involves a rental property and the fraudster is living in it. This is because when an appraisal report or inspection report is requested by the purchaser or bank, the perpetrator may arrange for the appraiser or inspector to check the property without the knowledge of the real owner and without raising any suspicion.

The fraud may not come to light for many months. By that time the fraud perpetrator has completely disappeared from the scene. The real owner either has lost title to his/her house or has a huge mortgage on the property.

Possible remedy for the victim is to sue the real estate agent if one was involved, the lawyer and the bank. Whether the victim wins the case will be a matter of individual circumstances. The fraud will also be reported to the police.

Lesson to be learned: identity theft is real and kicking. Take all the precaution you can to keep your personal data as private as possible to prevent people from stealing your identity and making you a victim of fraud.

Stretch Marks: Prevention and Treatment During Pregnancy

More than half of all pregnant women will develop stretch marks during their pregnancy. Otherwise known as striae gravidarum, stretch marks look like streaks on the surface of the skin, and may be vary in color depending on your natural skin color. Most lighter skinned women develop pinkish stretch marks, whereas darker skinned women tend to have stretch marks that are lighter than the surrounding skin.

Most women develop stretch marks on their abdomen during pregnancy, however it is also common to get stretch marks on the buttocks, hips, breasts and thighs. In some cases up to 90 percent of women have stretch marks on some part of their body as a result of pregnancy.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks form when your skin is stretched rapidly as happens during pregnancy. Most women develop stretch marks during the later trimesters of pregnancy though some women start to develop them as soon as their bellies start growing.

Stretch marks are actually small tears that form in the tissue that supports the skin and helps it stretch. Stretch marks represent the tearing or separation of collagen from the skin when tearing occurs. Stretch marks are not harmful or painful and usually fade over time.

Who Gets Stretch Marks?

Many women believe that using lotions and creams help prevent stretch marks. Realistically speaking however, the number of stretch marks you get depends on how elastic your skin is. The elasticity of your skin usually relates to your genetic make up. The best thing you can do is find out if your mother got bad stretch marks during pregnancy. If she did, you are probably more prone to stretch marks than other women.

Keep in mind the more weight you gain during pregnancy the more likely you are to have stretch marks. Normally the skin is elastic and capable of stretching quite a bit, however for some women the changes that occur during pregnancy are very drastic. These rapid fluctuations of weight and skin stretching can result in stretch marks.

Women with multiples are more likely to get stretch marks because their bellies usually grow much larger than women with single pregnancies. Other women likely to develop stretch marks include women who gain a lot of weight quickly during their pregnancy and women who carry big babies.

Here are some other factors that may contribute to your susceptibility to stretch marks:

*If you developed stretch marks before (like on your breasts during puberty) you are more likely to get stretch marks while pregnant.

*If you had stretch marks during another pregnancy you will usually get them again.

*If you are overweight or gain more weight than recommended you are more likely to get stretch marks.

*The better hydrated and well nourished you are the less likely you are to develop serious stretch marks.

Stretch Mark Prevention

Most women believe that they can prevent stretch marks by using creams and lotions. There are many formulations on the market today that claim to help prevent stretch marks. Some of these may help moisturize your skin and reduce itching. They may help reduce some stretch marks however there are no scientific studies that support this.

You probably know at least one parent however that swears by cocoa butter or some other formulation to prevent stretch marks. If nothing else rubbing these creams into your belly provides your unborn baby with a light and comforting massage. They may also give you peace of mind knowing you did everything possible to prevent stretch marks.

The best thing you can do to minimize stretch marks aside from using any creams or moisturizers you select is gaining the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy. Doctors recommend most women gain between 25 and 34 pounds. Gaining much more than this can cause you to develop more stretch marks.

Removing Stretch Marks

Most women worry about stretch marks after they have their baby. Fortunately most stretch marks do fade with time. Usually after 12 moths postpartum most stretch marks are light and less noticeable. Their texture may remain different from the surrounding skin however. Many women notice their stretch marks fading into whitish lines that are minimally noticeable.

Some women have very severe stretch marks that impact their self esteem after pregnancy. There are many treatments available for women that want to improve the appearance of their stretch marks.

If your stretch marks are particularly bad, you may consult with your doctor or a dermatologist. Some topical treatments such as tretinoin cream can help reduce stretch marks. These creams must be used after pregnancy however, because they can cause defects in your unborn baby.

Most of the topical treatments available should be used shortly after delivery, before they start to fade. The more time that passes between the delivery and use of cream, the less likely they are to be effective.

If you are breastfeeding it is important you consult with your doctor before using any stretch mark treatments. Some treatments may impact your milk supply or pass through the breast milk to your baby.

Most of the creams available to reduce stretch marks do not help relieve the sagging skin that also accompanies childbirth. There are some newer treatments including laser treatments however that may improve the skins elasticity and help reduce stretch marks. Some women also consider plastic surgery after they are done having children. A tummy tuck can help hide some stretch marks and reduce sagging skin.

Most women are able to joyfully overlook stretch marks when they consider the miracle of life they bring into the world. For the most the small annoyance even the worst stretch marks bring are well worth the joys of bringing a newborn baby into the world. Do what you can during pregnancy to maintain an appropriate weight and try not to worry too much about stretch marks. Many women wear them with pride, a war wound or badge of honor related to their pregnancy. Why not wear them with pride?

At Women's Healthcare Topics website you will find valuable and up-to-date information on numerous topics related to women's health including Signs of Pregnancy, Chlamydia, Hysterectomy, Early Pregnancy Symptoms and more.

Boards and Boundaries - The Benefits to Boards in Acting as Boundary Setters

It is not popular to speak of boundaries, particularly in an age when we break down organizational silos and make organizations flatter. Poorly conceived and poorly implemented boundaries have hindered organizations.

Even so, our experience proves the usefulness of boundaries. Roads are boundaries that help us safely get from one place to another. Office space boundaries greatly effect where and how we work. City, state and national boundaries help us to exercise proper authority, settle disputes and live peaceably.

Boundaries define organizations. A boundary defines what an organization does and does not do. It defines who is in and out. It defines what are acceptable an unacceptable behaviors. It defines owners, authorities, customers and beneficiaries. Whenever you speak of what is and is not true, you are describing an organization and its boundaries.

Defining boundaries may be the most important thing a board can do for an organization. There a several benefits to good boundaries.

1. Boundaries help you achieve desired results.

Every organization has a purpose, a goal. A goal, or mission or vision, is a type of boundary. It defines what you want to be in or out of the bounds of reality.

Just as boundaries can define the ends of an organization, it can define the means. There may be many good ways to get somewhere, but you want to stay out of the ditches, avoid accidents and stay under the speed limit. These means related boundaries help you achieve your goals in ways that are in keeping with your values and ethics.

2. Boundaries give employees empowerment and confidence with reasonable constraints.

Boundaries act like the playing field and rules in games like football, baseball or basketball. Coaches do not need to direct every move because the rules and physical bounds define what the goal is, what is in or out, and what means are acceptable for achieving the goal. The boundaries simultaneously constrain the actions of the players and empower them to act within those constraints.

3. Boundaries improve executive accountability because they are easier to monitor than an area.

Boards can get lost in the details of the organizations they oversee, even (or especially) in small organizations. You cannot watch every footfall of a runner. You cannot watch every location a tennis ball might land. You can more easily see if a runner is in his lane or if a tennis ball lands in bounds. The boundaries allow players to monitor and correct themselves. As a board, you can concentrate on the bigger issues instead of every action of your organization. Employees can make the calls and come to you when something is close to the line.

4. Boundaries help boards be more effective.

Some of the most important boundaries a board can set are its own. A board should know its purpose. It should know its role in operations and it relationship with executives. It should know how it will conduct business. By setting boundaries, you can stay out of things that are better left to others and concentrate on setting direction, planning, ensuring accountability and watching out for stakeholder interests. Boundaries on how you do business can make you meetings clear and effective, avoiding confusion and wasted time.

As a board, look at you role as a type of surveyor laying out the boundaries of your organization. Your well-laid boundaries will serve as positive constraint on you and your organization that will keep you on track and focused.

Stop Acting Based on Misunderstandings about What's Going on and Accomplish 20 Times More

Organizations are hobbled by false beliefs that have always rested on faulty evidence. Those false beliefs waste resources, time, and effort by focusing attention in unproductive and counter productive areas and activities.

Here's an example: For most organizations, good ideas are 20 times more likely to come from outside the organization than within. Yet most organizations assume that almost all good good ideas will come from within and focus time, attention, and resources accordingly. It's like trying to grow strawberries in the the shade; those sun-loving plants won't do well if you believe they prosper best in the shade.

The misunderstanding-of-the-facts stall (a bad habit that reduces results) is particularly harmful because some of your best people already realize that you are operating on faulty assumptions. Since actions based on those assumptions are folly, these key employees are losing faith in the future of the organization and the quality of its leadership. Soon, you may find recovery from your mistakes is made more challenging as your most talented people seek other opportunities.

Misleading Beliefs: The Danger of False Assumptions Abounds

How is a misunderstanding-of-the-facts stall different from a disbelief stall? A disbelief stall is based on something that was once true, but no longer is. A misunderstanding-of-the-facts stall is based on a perception of the situation that was never true. Here are some examples of harmful misconceptions:

The future can be accurately forecast.

Competitors will stand still while we make rapid progress.

Agreement among colleagues means that issues are understood.

Customers will continue to make the decisions in the same ways they always have.

All long-held assumptions and beliefs should be questioned. Ask yourself:

Is it really true?

If it isn't true, why do people believe it to be true?

What's needed to persuade people to change their beliefs?

Titanic Misconceptions: A Stitch in Time

The fate of the Titanic illustrates several dimensions of the misunderstanding-of-the-facts stall. It was an obvious misunderstanding of the facts to believe that the ship was unsinkable and to provide too few life boats for the passengers and crew. We have learned from that error. Today, we've learned from the Titanic's experience and all liners are required to have enough life boats for everyone.

The actual sinking related to a different misunderstanding of the facts, one about the weather. Normally, icebergs in the North Atlantic would have been found floating far north of the Titanic's path on that frigid night in April 1912. The captain disregarded a report from another ship that icebergs had moved to a more southerly latitude. Why? He believed that icebergs never traveled that far south during this season. If the captain had double-checked with other available sources of information, such as other ships and shore stations, he might have gotten a confirmation that icebergs were loose in his area in time to slow down and avoid the sinking. None of the 1,503 deaths would have occurred had the ship slowed down in the iceberg-infested seas, or, better still, had the captain chosen a more southerly route where there were no icebergs.

The ship's contact with the iceberg was made worse by a command to turn away from the looming iceberg. It's anyone's instinct to avoid a collision. In this situation, that instinct was based on a misconception. While many would have suffered broken bones and some would have died from injuries during a head-on collision, the Titanic would probably not have sunk after such a collision. Few of its watertight compartments would have been breached. Because the ship turned, the iceberg slashed along the entire length of the ship on one side, resulting in almost half the watertight compartments being breached. If all those compartments filled with sea water, the Titanic would sink. None of its designers had ever considered the possibility the ship would sideswipe an iceberg along so much of her length.

Once struck, another misconception sealed the ship's doom. No one checked soon enough to see how severe the damage was. Subsequent investigations have shown that the total area breached in the ship's side was less than ten square feet, across many different "watertight" compartments. With fast action, rescue crews could have placed mattresses and waterproof liners over enough of the gashes in the least damaged compartments to have kept the ship afloat until rescuers arrived.

Passengers also didn't want to take their chances with an early life boat in the North Atlantic, feeling they were safer on board. Many of the life boats were launched without a full complement. Many other life boats couldn't be launched later because the ship was listing so hard on the side where the iceberg struck its sideways blow.

Once the Titanic was in peril, misunderstanding of the facts once again weighed in to create unnecessary harm. The captain of the Californian, a nearby ship large enough to rescue everyone aboard the Titanic, was alerted by the watch that Titanic was launching distress flares. The captain decided these pyrotechnics must be some kind of celebration and sailed on. All this captain had to do to avoid this mistake was to wake up his radioman and ask the Titanic, "You're not sinking, are you?"

The lesson to be learned is that we can change course and avoid icebergs that can mortally damage our organizations. We don't have to steam at top speed through treacherous waters without enough life boats simply because we misunderstand the dangers.

Bathroom Furniture Is What Defines A Room

Furniture is what defines a room, just like good furniture is essential for any home; bathroom furniture, is essential to any well planned bathroom. Traditionally bathroom furniture is supposed to be restricted to the usual mirror, or towel storage cupboard, this is a common misconception, bathroom furniture encompasses everything from a wall mounted mirror, to the most stylish shower racks. No longer does one have to restricted himself to buying bathroom furniture for just utility purpose. Besides the utility they serve, bathroom furniture is now an essential bathroom accessory. Just like matching the furniture with the dcor in any drawing room is important similarly, it is essential that your bathroom furniture is carefully chosen and matches the dcor of your bathroom.

Before you go ahead and consider buying furniture for your bathroom, there are a few essential facts that must be kept in mind, the first being that mixing and matching furniture is not everyone's cup of tea, unless you are confident that you have an eye for detail, you should considering buying a vanity set (a vanity set is a complete set of bathroom furniture like cupboards, mirrors, and all the components are usually matched). If you are confident that you can match your bathroom furniture, then you should have a very good idea of the kind of bathroom furniture you need, this means you should have a very good estimate of the space constraints in you bathroom. Depending on the dcor, the space and other parameters you should decide to go for either, wall hung furniture or free-standing furniture.

Wall hung furniture as is evident, is furniture that can be hung or fixed to the wall of a bathroom, this type of furniture has its advantage over free-standing furniture in that it occupies lesser space and is less prone to wear and tear (a fact that is a topic of much debate), however free-standing furniture is more elegant looking and if space is not a constraint one should consider free-standing furniture. Therefore on the basis of how furniture is integrated into your bathroom, there are two major types of furniture:

Wall Hung Furniture Wall hung furniture is a hot favourite with people who like roomy bathrooms, and those who have limited space to work with. Of course space is not the only criteria that should influence your decision to go for wall hung furniture, depending on the look and feel of your bathroom you can choose between wall hung furniture and free-standing furniture (or both). However if you are cramped for room, by default your choice will be wall hung furniture. Almost all types of bathroom furniture comes as wall hung furniture. The most simplest of mirrors to the most elegantly designed cabinets are available as wall hung furniture.

Free-standing furniture Compared to wall hung furniture, free-standing furniture has a more elegant and classical look and feel, there are more contemporary forms of free-standing furniture available, and once again like all stylish furniture there are some very impressive sets of Italian free-standing furniture available. The simplest example of free-standing furniture is perhaps a chest of drawers that can be bought and installed in a bathroom, there are also some more impressive forms of free-standing furniture available like full length adjustable mirrors, and elegantly designed stools.

The Memory Improvement System

I have previously touched on the subject on enhancing memory by paying more attention to how we encoded information and experience. Here, I want to move on to how we retrieve information to enhance our memory. To heighten your awareness of your own memory improvement system.

Last week I spoke about encoding information better so that we can access it more readily when required to do so. Encoding information with your own memory improvement system of course means processing it internally; and internal processing involves your senses. A number of things emerge from this:

1. We tend to find it easier to remember using certain preferred senses. So if you are strongly visual, make sure when you are being introduced to someone new that you take a mental picture of their face and perhaps see their name on their forehead, or like a badge or necklace close to their face. If you know you find it easy to remember sounds, hear the sound of them saying their name and make sure you record it internally alongside their image, so that when you see them next the visual image calls up the sound of the name. I always make a point of saying the persons name several times within the first few sentences out aloud to really get it in my mind. Looking in the appropriate direction to access the representational system you want to store the information in will help ensure you store the information in the most appropriate way too.

2. The more of your senses that are involved, the richer your internal representation and the storage will be. You can do this deliberately to help with encoding. Involve as many of your senses as possible, in order to make a memory really rich a retrievable by multiple routes. (Anything memorable about the temperature, moisture and pressure of their handshake for example)

3. Some things are best encoded using particular senses, which means attending in that system before attempting to encode anything. Consistently good spelling in English, for example, depends on visual processing. Researchers have investigated what good spellers did, and found that they all store mental pictures of how the words look. When they need to spell the word, they refer to that internal picture to get the right spelling.

People who are good at physical skills will tend to store information about them kinaesthetically, and they may not be able to explain what they do in words. I know someone who is a genius at carpentry; he does lots of work for me. When asked by his friend to explain how to use a lathe, he found that he was quite unable to explain or even remember how he did it. He had to sit down at the machine and actually work with it himself: his hands seemed to know what to do.

When developing your own memory improvement system, you can develop a facility with any of your senses if you practise. This can seem remarkable to others who have not bothered to do so. And this is true of entire cultures as well. Any culture reliant on oral transmission, for instance, will have highly developed auditory memory strategies such as rhythm, rhyme and mnemonics. So while it seems amazing to us, it was perfectly natural in ancient Greece for epic poems thousands of lines long to be committed to memory and accurately recited. Such skills still exist in parts of Africa where literacy and computer ownership are low, and also in India.

Conversely, imagine how strange it would be trying to learn a dance by reading a book about it, or learning to sing by looking at pictures of people singing. You need the right tool for the job. So check if you have the right senses alerted for what you want to learn.

Before I go further, here is a little quiz, to help you find out more about your own memory:

Exploring Your Memory:

- Get really curious about your memory. What do you find easy to remember? What do you tend to forget? Do your own patterns tell you anything about what is important to you and what is less so? Or what kinds of representation come most naturally and you store most easily? Or where your self-limiting beliefs are?

- Find out how you go about remembering. Do you: make pictures of the information? Tell yourself stories? Hear someone telling you? Try it on and experience? Like to get your hands dirty?

- What has to happen for you to forget something? Does your mind Just go blank? Do you steer away from something and find yourself thinking of something else? Do you say to yourself, I must not forget this in which case your wording itself is directing your attention to forgetting rather than remembering. Remember this is far more progressive by the way.

- How do your remembering and forgetting relate to your interest in the information and your feelings about it?

- What kind of things do you have a poor memory for, and why?

- Do you have a good memory for things you would rather not? I knew someone who easily remembered everything that went wrong and every time he was ridiculed by others. If you do, how are you encoding these experiences? Are you replaying a video? Listening to a tape? Feeling the feelings? See if you can pinpoint how you are doing this.

So let's get on to the subject of memory retrieval.

Encoding and retrieval are closely linked. Bruce Chatwin recounts a really good example of how the two processes interact in his book The Songlines. Visiting Australia, Chatwin learnt how the Aboriginal culture and history was encoded and passed on through songs that related to invisible paths winding across the land- the Songlines. So the land itself and all its natural features, every hump and hillock, encoded the stories of the ancient Dreamtime from generation to generation.

The Aborigines sing their Songlines as a series of couplets that match the length of time it takes to walk a particular stretch of land. So the land and song are one. In fact, according to Chatwin, they believe that they are singing the land into existence as they walk over it, in a wondrous mixture of geography and mythology. Each tribe has its own territory and Songline, and each knows about the history of its neighbour because of the way their Songlines interlink.

While travelling in the back country, Chatwin gave a lift to a man called Limpy, who wanted to visit a place he had never been to, which was of immense importance on his Songline. After seven hours driving, and about ten miles away from the valley, Limpy began muttering and gesticulating rapidly as he stared out of the window. He had begun to recognise places he had only previously heard about, and he was singing the Songline to himself. But he was forced to do this in great haste because of the speed of the car: the Songline he knew went at walking speed.

The Songline had been encoded through singing and walking through a landscape with close attention to detail, and in a linear sequence. Every note of the melody was linked to a feature of the landscape, and this made remembering the Songline and passing it to all tribe members and down generations much easier.

When the car journey intersected with the Songline, Limpys memory of the whole Songline was triggered, but where the man-made road deviated from the Songline Limpy switched off and only resumed the experience when the road met the line again.

A somewhat similar process was used by Roman orators when they memorised complex speeches. They would mentally link each heading of their speech in its correct sequence with the features of another sequence they already knew well such as the landmarks of a particular building or route. By linking the sequencing of the newly created speech to a sequence they already knew, they highjacked an existing memory to help them remember the new speech.

If you want to use this pattern to help remember a story, or a presentation, think of a route you know really well. Take yourself along it in your mind, stopping at each major landmark and finding ways to link the sequence of the headings in your story or presentation with the sequence of landmarks. Inventing links will help you create the links you need, and the more ridiculous or vivid the links the easier you will find them to remember.

Learning How To Sew - The Basics!

So you want to learn to sew but Grandma is off hang-gliding? Well, we can help with the very basics here. Well go over some of the first steps and then give you some places to go for more information. So take a deep breath and lets get started.

Find a pattern.
This can be the most fun part! But when you are really new at this you want to choose something easy. Dont look at fancy dresses yet. You dont want to mess with sleeves, zippers or facings...no running till you can walk. Also avoid doll clothes at first, tiny things are not easier. Straight lines good, curves bad. Look for the words Fast, Easy, Jiffy or Simple To Sew.

How do you find a pattern? Well any fabric store should have several pattern books, usually from the Big Four pattern companies, Vogue, Butterick, McCalls, and Simplicity. These generally are put out seasonally, for spring/summer or fall/winter for example. If you want more choices then come back to your friendly online pattern sellers. Thats where youll find other companies and a much wider choice.

Choosing a size.
If you are going to make clothing you need to figure out what size you want. Dont go by the size you buy at the mall. You need to know your measurements. And dont try to take your own, get a friend with a tape measure and write it all down. Youll need Bust (across the fullest part), Waist ( at your beltline) and Hips ( widest part) to start. There are lots of tricks to get exact measurements and later youll want more numbers, but these are the basics.

When you see a pattern you like compare the sizes to your numbers and pick the best match. Warning: every pattern company is different and they all change their sizing from time to time. Always check your numbers against any pattern you buy. Just because you bought a Vogue 12 last time doesnt mean you will always wear a Vogue 12. This is especially true for Vintage patterns...always check the measurements!

Now that you have a pattern envelope in your hand dont leave the store yet. You are going to need some more stuff. First is fabric. Start by looking on the back of that pattern envelope, there is usually a list of suggested fabrics. For your first projects to will want to stick with cotton or a polyester/ cotton blend. Fuzzy fabrics, fancy textures or sheers are tricky to sew, better saved till you know your machine better. Youll see the words - with and without Nap. That refers to texture on the fabric.

Velvet has Nap, cotton usually doesnt. For now you want Without Nap. Cottons will be found in quilting section of the store, or look on the end of the bolt ( thats the name of the cardboard that the fabric is wound around), on one end there should be a label with the fabric content and the price per yard (36 inches). Just poke around and youll find it. After youve found a few bolts marked Cotton you can look around the store and youll see similar fabrics. Go find one you really like. This is important. There is no point in sewing with fabric you dont like. It doesnt have to be the most expensive stuff in the store, but it should be a color or pattern you are excited about.

The pattern envelope will tell you how much fabric you need for the project youve chosen. On the front the choices will have small numbers or letters near each model. These are the Views. Your project will be on a chart that shows View 1, or View 2, ect.. The chart will also have the sizes listed, use it find how much fabric you need. Now, just pull that bolt out and take it over to the cutting table. The folks there can look at your pattern and help you get the right fabric and the right amount. Its usually a good idea to buy a little extra fabric...this allows for shrinkage and little mishaps.

Next look at that envelope back again. You are going to need some Notions. Thats a catch all phrase that includes all the threads, trims, buttons, zippers, snaps and other bits to finish your project. Since you are starting easy you shouldnt need much at first, but you will need thread. Pick a spool that matches the background color of your fabric, black thread for black fabric, ect. Dont worry about this to much, for the most part the thread wont show.

Resist going nuts here, there are tons of very pretty metallic and shiny threads out there, but remember unless you are sewing with decorative top-stitching the thread wont show. But you do want to get thread that has the same content as the fabric it will sew, so we want cotton or cotton/polyester blend. Check that Notions list again, do you need trim or anything else? It should be listed by View. Oh, and you are going to need some big flat space to lay all this out on. The fabric store will have these folding cardboard table toppers. They are pretty cheap and very nice to have. Now go pay and run home!

Prewash your material before you sew...wash it just like you will wash the finished project. Then you wont make a fabulous thing that later shrinks all goofy.

Lay out the tissue pattern. It will be huge, but you only need the pieces that are for your View and size. Cut the tissue pieces apart...but beware! There are weird little marks on the edges of the pattern pieces that look like arrow points, or like two arrows next to each other. They are usually called Notches. You need these later...dont cut them off! Instead cut around them. If there are any other odd looking marks save them...when in doubt dont cut stuff off. The marks vary from one company to another, the printed instruction sheet inside the pattern will explain them. That brings us to the all important Instruction Sheet.

This piece of paper is your friend. From here on out it will give you step by step instructions on how to proceed. There will be drawings and written instructions. Read them over at first, but dont get overwhelmed, sewing is a step by step process. There will be a drawing of how to lay out your tissue pieces on the fabric. Its like a map! The fabric is often folded, look at the drawing carefully. If it says Right Sides Together that means the colorful, brighter side of the fabric, the Right Side, should be touching when its is folded. (The plainer side is called the Wrong Side.) All the symbols used on the pattern will be on the sheet. Be sure you understand the ones that explain those notches, the cutting line and be sure you figure out the one that means Place on Fold ... thats not a cutting line.

There are a few other terms that might be confusing. Grain Line ( or Straight of Grain) is a term that refers to the weave of the fabric. You want your finished project to lay flat or hang smoothly. If you cut the pieces out with the grain (vs. against the grain) everything will lay better. The pattern pieces will show a Straight of Grain symbol, usually a double headed arrow. Just try to have that arrow point parallel to the Selvage. Selvage is that hard edge of the fabric. It isnt meant to be included in your project. When you layout the tissue pieces dont use the selvage.

Now pin the tissue pieces to the fabric using straight pins. Place the pins so that they dont cross where you will need to cut. Use plenty of pins, youll be glad later. Next use good sharp scissors to cut the fabric making sure you leave those notches in place.

Now you can turn to that Instruction Sheet and proceed! Just go step-by-step, reading carefully and trust your gut. If you get stuck picture the finished project in your head and see if the next step makes sense. And if you get stuck come on back...I know people who know stuff!

Deciding to Sell your Business

Deciding to sell your business can be one of the biggest decisions in your life, whatever the reasons are for the sale. It is impossible not to become emotionally attached to your own business. Seeing a business grow can be a wonderful thing on the flip side deciding to sell the business can be gut wrenching experience.

Ideally a business owner will have prepared for the sae at least 2 years previously. This process is generally started by assessing the financial state of the business with a view to creating audited financial statements with future projections that show the company's revenue and potential growth.

Documentation should be put together to clearly show all transactions, this is vital information for any purchaser, it will allow the company to be easily evaluated. Information on customers should also be available; a new owner would not want to face a customer who expects to be treated in a particular way, not armed with this information

All supplier and customer contracts should be examined. Terms and conditions for each process should be available, if required. Contracts should not be coming to an end as new owner takes charge. Terminating contracts out of spite simply because you are selling the business serves no purpose at all. Remember when selling a business it is not simply about financials, it is also about keeping your reputation.

Start codifying business policies and procedures, if necessary, create a handover file this file should document exactly how to best run the business including as much information as possible as to aid the new owner, even your thoughts on future growth and development will be useful.

You will need to review your real estate leases, if your business is tied to a particular location you will need to make sure the lease is not set to expire or require renegotiation at the time you are planning to sell the company. The location of the company may discourage buyers; if so consider moving to a different location before you put the business on the market.

Equipment leases and material contracts will have to be checked so they have plenty of time to run when the business sis handed over. You will need to fully evaluate and catalogue all the company assets.

Finally, don't forget about the employees. The loss of key employees during the sale of the business can ruin a deal. Key employees are crucial to the new owner's success, so it's important to determine which employees are prepared to stay with the company during and after the transition. It is important that employees don't hear about the sale of the company from a third party.

Ways For 11 Year Olds To Make Money

There are several ways for 11 year olds to make money. Start to think of all the skills your child has, and the things they already do that could be paid for.

Many children now are very computer literate, while many adults and seniors still are not. This is a great way for kids to make money, because they can earn a little extra cash, help out some adults, or seniors and learn to communicate better with adults.

There are many other things they can do with the computer too. They can teach others how to use the Internet, sending e-mail, checking e-mail, using a digital camera, and printing out pictures. Just about anything your child can do on the computer can be taught, and by helping them to advertise to the right groups of people and teaching them to be safe working with others, you can help them achieve a way to make money.

Household chores are another way to make money. 11 year olds should have no problem at all with helping with laundry, and your trusted friends, family, and neighbors, would probably love to pay someone else a small fee to do this for them. Think about how much you would pay just to only have to put away your clothes, no sorting, folding, drying, etc. It would all be done for you.

Outside chores are also good ways for kids to make money. While they may be too young to ride on a lawn mower (up to your discretion of course), or even push a mower, they are very capable of weeding a garden, shoveling some snow, planting a garden, and more.

The idea here is that all you have to do is think of things you would pay for that your child can already do, if they have chores at home, these chores could be done for others as well, for a small fee. Last but not least although 11 year olds are a bit young to babysit by themselves, they would make great parent helpers. A parent helper is someone who will play with the kids, and keep them relatively involved while the parent does things such as, cooking dinner, cleaning the house, exercising, etc.

Start by advertising to your friends and family and help your child choose prices to charge to get started making money. Entrepreneurial skills last a lifetime.

You can learn a lot more about ways for kids to make money by checking Kids Want Money. There are over 68 ways for kids aged 10 and up to make money check it out Now. http://www.kidswantmoney.com

Decorating Outdoor Decks and Patios With Themes

Decks and Patios don't count towards square footage in your home, but they sure do go a long way towards making a home feel larger, more inviting, and fun. Decks and patios can be wonderful places to entertain friends and family, or they can be secluded quiet spots for you to get away from the hustle of everyday life. Whichever you choose... the key to having great decks and patios is to decorate them with a theme.

One popular deck or patio theme is the outdoor barbecue. Now technically this is a function of the area, but using a touch of decorating flair, you can make it into an overall theme too. For instance, putting rustic furniture on your patio or deck would give it a country or western BBQ theme. This works wonderfully when you have a firepit-style barbecue grill, or an outdoor fireplace. If your preference is upscale and classy, and your barbecue equipment is the shiny, fancy, large cookstation-style, try setting up a bistro theme instead.

If you have kids of course, it helps to go with a fun theme instead. A beach theme is an excellent example here: Colorful beach chairs and sun umbrellas set the tone wonderfully. You can even use ropes, sails, nets, and lifeguard floats to hang from the sides of your fun deck, and post flags from different Caribbean or Mediterranean countries on the corners of the deck. Keeping a chest inside of beach paraphernalia - floats, leis, sunglasses, and even a pirate's eye patch will keep your children entertained as you try to prepare dinner.

A country theme is also wonderful for decks and patios. Try using old barrels as both tables and chairs for this theme. To make the chairs: Cut part of the barrel to leave a curved "back", then nail the top into place as a seat. You can even put checkered chair cushions on these to enhance them further. And of course, small decorating touches such as old soda bottles, signs, tools, and flowers help enhance and round out the overall look.

Whatever theme you decide to use on your deck, the essentials are a table and chairs with some extra seating and side tables. If your deck is too small for that, you can simply purchase a couple of Adirondack chairs and side tables to match. Your parties may be smaller, but you can always put a picnic table in the yard to seat more people. Choose your own theme; a deck is a place where you can put your favorite random items to good use. So from Coca-Cola to country to classic, create your own deck decorations and spend the rest of the summer enjoying your friends on your jazzy new deck.
